maternAL health - afghanistan
This collection of images were taken in Charkent, Balkh province Afghanistan following the work of a small team of midwives working to encourage women to give birth in the only clinic to be set up in this remote area.
Afghanistan has one of the highest mortality rates in the world. Many women have limited access to health care, living in remote areas and often give birth at home. It is very hard for women in the area to always reach the clinic, this series follows a first time mother who went in to labour in the middle of the night, the small team went out to collect her and bring her to the clinic for a safe birth. They also follow up with patients who have given birth recently.
